Edmonton Google Event: The UnAgency Launches!

On June 23, we co-hosted a very successful event with Google at the Oasis Centre in Edmonton to launch The UnAgency, the non-automotive division of Strathcom Media. Over 250 people attended; the venue was buzzing with excitement. So much so, that #GoogleYEG was trending on Twitter and other social media platforms across the city.

Sheldon Bernstein from Google spoke about some of the moments that customers experience and how businesses should try to be there for these moments. He also spoke about how marketing and technology has changed and gave some examples of ways that businesses can embrace and utilize these changes.

Duncan Cochrane – the President of Strathcom Media and The UnAgency – spoke about how the agency model is broken. He emphasized the importance of transparency, and explained that many agencies out there are not transparent. He also spoke about new technologies in digital advertising, and showed a variety of free tools that Google offers that many businesses do not know about or take advantage of.

The key takeaway from both presentations is that Google and The UnAgency believe in educating and empowering their customers as opposed to selling their customers. Both Duncan and Sheldon gave everyone a new tool, or at least a new perspective that everyone could take back to their businesses and put to use.

This was the first event of this scale that Google has ever held in Edmonton. In fact, we had a total of 4 Googlers that travelled from Toronto, New York City, and Austin, Texas for the experience. Everyone was welcome to meet them and ask them questions about anything; about their business, about their personal search inquiries, and even if the movie (The Internship) was accurate – it was!  Guests could also sit down with Google Certified Experts for mini-audits of their online presence.

We also had some pretty bad-ass prizes, and below are the winners!

Tamara Vineberg – the Michael Kors Purse

Jay Kuystermans – the Drone

Jennifer Garman – the Google Prize Pack

We are so thankful for everyone that came out and helped make the official launch of The UnAgency such a success. If you would like to be in the loop for our future events, please subscribe to our newsletter. We will see you at the next Google event!
